The Legal System’s Role in Education Policy
|
The Wanton Injustice Legal Detail (WILD) and Twin Cities Diversity in Practice (TCDIP) invite you to join us in a deep dive into the landmark Skeen v. State case and its long-standing implications for public education in Minnesota. WILD is an affiliate non-profit of TCDIP focused on eliminating anti-Black racism and all forms of racism in Minnesota. We will talk with Page (now retired) and former Chief Justice Eric Magnuson, who argued for an intervenor school district in the Skeen case, about their reflections nearly three decades later and how we can use the law and a constitutional amendment to help move Minnesota’s public school system forward. September 15, 4:00 PM – The World is Opening Up Again! How to Be Inclusive in the Hybrid Workplace – Presented by Ritu Bhasin
|
After almost a year and a half of working remotely during the global pandemic, many workplaces are starting to plan to return to some form of in-person working. For most organizations this will likely result in a hybrid work environment where some team members are in the office while others continue to work remotely. Although some of the DEI challenges that were amplified by remote work environments may be addressed by this shift, hybrid working can give rise to a host of new inclusion considerations for leaders and their teams. In this free bci webinar, Ritu Bhasin, DEI, authenticity and leadership expert, will share critical strategies for leading and working inclusively in a hybrid environment, including how to:
• Hold inclusive hybrid meetings where all voices are heard
• Build and maintain relationships across cultural identities
• Foster positive team morale, connection, authenticity and belonging
• Minimize bias in individual and team environments

September 22: What Every Lawyer Should Know about the Future of Transgender Student Rights
|
Over the past year, courts have extended the protections of state and federal law to transgender students. In N.H. v. Anoka-Hennepin School District, the Minnesota Court of Appeals held that the Minnesota Constitution and the Minnesota Human Rights Act protected transgender students’ rights to use the locker room consistent with their gender identity. This year, the Supreme Court declined review of the Fourth Circuit’s decision in Grimm v. Gloucester County School Board, which held that the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution and Title IX protect transgender students from school bathroom policies that prohibit them from affirming their gender.
In light of these recent developments, this CLE will address what lawyers should know about the legal landscape concerning transgender student rights, how states, school boards, and individual school administrators are applying and enforcing these laws, and how these developments will affect a wide variety of industries and practice areas.
